Privacy
Kai is an AI tutor run by Kristiania University College. This page explains what Kai stores when you use it, why, and what you can ask us to do about it.
What Kai stores
Your account details from your Kristiania login: name, university email address and your role (student, teacher, administrator). Kai does not ask for or store a password — sign-in goes through Kristiania's own Microsoft account system.
Your conversations: the messages you write, Kai's replies, and any files you attach or documents you upload.
Things Kai remembers about you between conversations, which you can read and delete at any time under Settings.
Technical records of use — which model answered, how many tokens a reply cost, and when — used to keep the service within its budget. These records count usage; they do not contain what you wrote.
If you connect Canvas, Kai uses your own Canvas access to read and write on your behalf. Kai never uses anyone else's Canvas access to act for you.
Who can see it
Message content is encrypted at rest in Kai's database, and message text is never written to Kai's application logs.
Your conversations are private to you. Other people see them only in cases you set in motion: creating a share link, or sharing an assistant or conversation with a course or a named person. Administrators can see account and usage information, not the contents of your chats.
Where your messages go
To answer you, Kai sends your message and the relevant conversation history to a language model hosted on Microsoft Azure under Kristiania's agreement with Microsoft. It is processed to generate the reply.
If you use a feature that searches the web or fetches a page, the search terms needed for that request go to the relevant external service.
How long it is kept
A conversation you have not touched for 180 days is moved to a deleted state, and is removed permanently 30 days after that. Conversations you pin are kept.
Deleting a conversation yourself starts the same 30-day countdown to permanent removal.
Research
Some assistants in Kai are part of a research project. Those are marked, and you are asked to agree before you can use them — you cannot be enrolled without saying yes.
If you agree, your conversations with that assistant are included in research exports in which your identity is replaced by a pseudonym. You can withdraw your agreement at any time, which stops any further use of your conversations in the research.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. You can also object to how it is used, or ask us to restrict that use.
You have the right to complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet).
